Market Cap Categories (Large/Mid/Small-Cap)

How companies are classified by total market value. - **Large-cap:** generally above $10B (US), or the top ~100 companies by market cap in India — more stable, slower growth - **Mid-cap:** roughly $2B–$10B — a balance of stability and growth potential - **Small-cap:** below $2B — higher growth potential, but also higher volatility and risk - India-specific: SEBI defines cap categories by *rank* (e.g. top 100 = large-cap) rather than a fixed rupee threshold

Risk vs Volatility

Two related but distinct ideas that are often conflated. - Volatility (standard deviation of returns) is a *measure* of risk, not risk itself - A volatile stock isn't automatically "risky" if the underlying business is sound and the holding period is long - Risk = probability of *permanent* capital loss; volatility = size of price swings, which can reverse - Beta measures volatility relative to the overall market — a beta of 1 means it moves with the market

P/E Ratio and Valuation Basics

Price-to-Earnings is a quick gauge of how many years of current earnings you're paying for in a share price. - **P/E = share price ÷ earnings per share** - Compare P/E within the same industry, not across industries — growth and capital intensity differ wildly - A high P/E can mean overvalued, or it can mean high expected growth; a low P/E can mean cheap, or a value trap - Related ratios: P/B (price-to-book), P/S (price-to-sales), PEG (P/E ÷ growth rate)

Diversification and Asset Allocation

Spreading capital across assets, sectors and geographies to reduce single-position risk. - Asset allocation (stocks vs bonds vs cash) typically matters more for long-term returns than individual stock picks - Diversification reduces unsystematic (company-specific) risk, but not systematic (market-wide) risk - Over-diversification ("diworsification") can dilute returns without meaningfully cutting risk

Dollar-Cost Averaging / SIP

Investing a fixed amount at regular intervals regardless of price. - Buys more units when prices are low, fewer when prices are high, averaging out the entry price over time - In India this is the SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) — the dominant retail entry point into mutual funds - Removes the need to time the market; trades potential upside for reduced timing risk and behavioral discipline - Works best with volatile assets over long horizons; less impactful on already-stable assets
